Suzuki Gears Up for EV Market Entry with e Vitara Launch
Suzuki, a long-standing player in the Australian automotive scene since the 1970s, known for its efficient petrol-powered vehicles like the Swift and Vitara SUVs, is set to make a significant move into the electric vehicle (EV) market. The Japanese manufacturer has revealed the specifications for its first battery-electric model in Australia, dubbed the e Vitara, which will be offered in two distinct variants: Motion and Ultra.
e Vitara Variants and Pricing Expectations
While official Australian pricing is yet to be announced, the e Vitara’s UK starting price of £26,249 positions it competitively, notably undercutting rivals like the BYD Atto 3, which begins at £37,705. Industry analysts anticipate the Australian launch price to hover around the $40,000 mark. The e Vitara is slated for an Australian release later this year, with an expected arrival around June.
A Defining Moment for Suzuki
Michael Pachota, Suzuki Australia’s GM of Automobile, described the e Vitara as a “defining moment” for the brand. He emphasized its significance as Suzuki’s inaugural battery electric vehicle and a clear indicator of the company’s evolution. “It’s our first battery electric vehicle and a clear signal of how we’re evolving as a brand, whilst remaining true to the values that have always defined Suzuki – efficiency, reliability and everyday usability. The e VITARA represents the next chapter in the evolution of one of Suzuki’s most recognisable nameplates, combining our compact SUV heritage with advanced electric technology, modern design and the practical thinking our customers expect from Suzuki,” Pachota stated.
Powertrain and Performance Details
The entry-level e Vitara Motion features a front-mounted electric motor delivering 106 kW of power and 193 Nm of torque. This variant is equipped with a 49 kWh Lithium-Iron-Phosphate (LFP) battery, offering an estimated WLTP range of 344 km.
The higher-spec e Vitara Ultra boasts an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, combining for a total output of 135 kW and 307 Nm of torque. This model is fitted with a larger 61 kWh battery, providing a projected range of up to 395 km. Acceleration figures for the e Vitara range from 7.4 to 9.6 seconds for the 0-100 km/h sprint, depending on the chosen variant.
Charging Capabilities
Both battery options support DC rapid charging up to 70 kW, allowing the e Vitara to charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 45 minutes. While this charging speed is on the higher end, it is slightly slower than the 30-minute benchmark common for many contemporary EVs. For slower charging, the e Vitara supports 11 kW AC charging, capable of replenishing the larger 61 kWh battery from 10% to 100% in under 6 hours.
Interior and Exterior Features
The Ultra variant enhances the specification of the Motion model with several premium additions. These include adaptive high beams, front LED fog lamps, a glass roof with a sunshade, an upgraded sound system featuring an Infinity sound system with a subwoofer, front heated seats, and premium upholstery. The e Vitara measures 4.28 metres in length and has a tare weight ranging from 1,700 kg to 1,900 kg, placing it in line with other compact electric SUVs.
Comprehensive Safety Suite
In line with Suzuki’s commitment to standard safety technology, the e Vitara will come equipped with a comprehensive suite of driver assistance and safety features across all models. This includes 7 airbags, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), Lane Departure Prevention (LDP), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), High Beam Assist (HBA), Blind Spot Monitor, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Dual Sensor Brake Support II (DSBS II), Multi-Collision Braking (MCB), and front and rear parking sensors.
