Tesla Eyes Major Expansion in Asia with Full Self-Driving Rollout in Japan

Tesla is set to expand its Full Self-Driving (FSD) capability to another Asian market, with Japan appearing to be the next country to receive the advanced driver-assistance system. This move signifies a significant step in Tesla’s global strategy to deploy its autonomous technology.

Ambitious 2026 Timeline Set for Japan

Richi Hashimoto, president of Tesla’s Japanese subsidiary, has announced an ambitious timeline for the implementation of Full Self-Driving in Japan. He stated, “We are aiming for implementation in 2026. [We are] doing everything in our power [to achieve this].”

This target builds upon successful employee test drives that commenced in 2025. Initially limited to the Model 3 in August 2025, these internal trials expanded to include the Model Y on March 5, 2026, receiving positive feedback from media participants.

Regulatory Approval and Existing Fleet Integration

Once regulatory approval is secured, Tesla plans to activate FSD through Over-the-Air (OTA) software updates. This approach could potentially equip the approximately 40,000 Teslas already operating on Japanese roads with the new capabilities.

Japan’s sophisticated traffic infrastructure and a strong adherence to safety regulations are considered advantageous for the rollout of autonomous driving technologies. The country’s structured approach to road usage is seen as an ideal environment for testing and implementing FSD.

Leadership Driving Sales Turnaround

The push for FSD implementation in Japan is closely linked with Richi Hashimoto’s leadership. Under his direction, Tesla has experienced a notable sales turnaround in the region.

In 2025, Tesla achieved a record delivery of 10,600 vehicles in Japan. This figure represents a nearly 90% increase from the previous year and marks the first time the company has surpassed 10,000 annual unit sales in the country.

Strategic Shift in Retail and Infrastructure

Tesla’s strategy in Japan has involved a significant shift from its previous online-only sales model. The company has established 29 physical showrooms strategically located in high-traffic shopping malls.

This retail expansion was complemented by investments in staff training and the introduction of attractive financing options in January 2026. Furthermore, Tesla aims to bolster its charging infrastructure by expanding its Supercharger network to over 1,000 points by 2027, enhancing vehicle accessibility and convenience for customers.

Broader International Expansion Context

The momentum in Japan aligns with Tesla’s broader international expansion efforts. In Europe, the Giga Berlin facility demonstrated production strength by manufacturing over 200,000 vehicles in 2025, despite a temporary operational halt. This output serves more than 30 European markets, with projections for continued production growth in 2026 and the commencement of battery cell manufacturing by 2027.

Despite regional challenges in electric vehicle sales, the Berlin factory remains a critical hub for supplying Model Y vehicles across the continent.

Asia’s Manufacturing Powerhouse: Giga Shanghai

Meanwhile, Giga Shanghai continues to be a cornerstone of Tesla’s global manufacturing operations. China, recognized as Tesla’s largest market, saw deliveries from the Shanghai plant increase by 9 percent year-over-year in January 2026, reaching 69,129 units. The company anticipates the introduction of more affordable new models later in the year.

Global Rollout of Advanced Technologies

Tesla’s advancements in Full Self-Driving are already underway in the United States and South Korea. Future plans include expanding FSD to Europe and other parts of Asia. These developments are set to complement the company’s initiatives to introduce its Cybercab and Optimus robot platforms to new international markets.

With the prospect of OTA-enabled autonomous driving on the horizon and a refined retail strategy yielding positive results, Tesla is demonstrably strengthening its global presence. From its showrooms in Tokyo to its assembly lines in Berlin and export operations from Shanghai, the company’s vision for sustainable, self-driving mobility is gaining significant traction across key international markets.
