SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell has announced that xAI, the artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk, will develop 1.2 gigawatts (GW) of power for its AI supercomputer site located in the Memphis area. This significant power pledge was made as part of the White House’s new “Ratepayer Protection Pledge.”
Commitment Made at White House Event
The announcement occurred during a White House event attended by United States President Donald Trump. Shotwell highlighted that xAI’s AI data center, situated near Memphis on the Tennessee-Mississippi state line, will feature a substantial energy installation designed to meet the facility’s extensive power requirements.
“As you know, xAI builds huge supercomputers and data centers and we build them fast,” Shotwell stated during the event. “Currently, we’re building one on the Tennessee-Mississippi state line. As part of today’s commitment, we will take extensive additional steps to continue to reduce the costs of electricity for our neighbors…”
Massive Power Installation Planned
Shotwell elaborated on xAI’s commitment, stating, “xAI will therefore commit to develop 1.2 GW of power as our supercomputer’s primary power source. That will be for every additional data center as well. We will expand what is already the largest global Megapack power installation in the world.”
This extensive installation is expected to not only power xAI’s supercomputer and future data centers but also provide substantial backup power for the surrounding region. Shotwell indicated that the system would offer more than enough energy to power the city of Memphis and the town of Southaven, Mississippi, where the data center is located.
To ensure grid stability and manage the significant energy demands, xAI plans to invest heavily in local infrastructure. “We will build new substations and invest in electrical infrastructure to provide stability to the area’s grid,” Shotwell added.
Environmental and Community Initiatives
Beyond energy provision, xAI is also addressing water conservation and local employment. Shotwell revealed plans to construct advanced water recycling plants aimed at protecting the Memphis aquifer.
“We haven’t talked about it yet, but this is actually quite important. We will build state-of-the-art water recycling plants that will protect approximately 4.7 billion gallons of water from the Memphis aquifer each year,” she explained. Furthermore, the project is expected to create thousands of jobs for American workers in the Memphis region, spanning both Tennessee and Mississippi.
Addressing Rising Energy Costs for AI Data Centers
The Ratepayer Protection Pledge was introduced by the federal government as a strategic initiative to mitigate concerns over escalating electricity costs associated with the rapid growth of large AI data centers. An Insider report noted that under this pledge, companies involved in developing significant AI infrastructure commit to independently securing their power generation needs.
This agreement aims to prevent the burden of increased energy consumption from AI facilities from falling onto local ratepayers, ensuring that the communities hosting these energy-intensive operations are not unfairly impacted by rising utility bills. xAI’s commitment represents a substantial step toward fulfilling these objectives, demonstrating a proactive approach to managing the energy footprint of advanced artificial intelligence infrastructure.
