The French Army is evaluating the potential of electric bicycles and motorcycles for military applications, focusing on their suitability as stealthy and efficient reconnaissance vehicles. These electric two-wheelers offer a combination of speed, quiet operation, and substantial range, attributes deemed crucial for modern tactical deployments.

Military Applications for Electric Mobility

The practicality of e-bikes extends beyond civilian use, with their performance characteristics aligning well with military requirements. Their ease of use, low noise signature, and increasing range make them ideal for missions demanding rapid and discreet troop movement. This trend is already evident in active conflict zones, where electric bikes have been adapted for combat duty in Ukraine.

French Army’s E-Bike Trials

Recently, the Battle Lab Terre innovation group, a technical division of the French Land Force, conducted tests on high-performance electric two-wheelers. The focus was on the LMX brand, specifically the LMX 56 electric bicycle and the LMX 161 electric motorcycle. The objective was to determine if these vehicles could serve effectively within the military framework.

Promising Initial Results and Future Testing

Headquartered in France, LMX Bikes is recognized for its advanced electric two-wheelers. While initial tests yielded promising outcomes, the French Army’s Technical Section (STAT) is slated to continue evaluating these lightweight electric vehicles throughout 2024. Further assessments will examine speed, range, stealth capabilities, and other performance metrics.

LMX 56 Electric Bicycle Specifications

The LMX 56 is designed as an off-road electric bicycle with power significantly exceeding conventional e-MTBs. It features a throttle and can deliver up to 2,500 watts of maximum power and 175 Nm of torque to the rear wheel. The drivetrain utilizes a conventional chain on the right and a belt drive connected to the motor on the left. Its battery system is reported to provide a range of up to 62 miles on a single charge.

LMX 161 Electric Motorcycle Capabilities

Marketed as a lightweight motocross bike, the LMX 161 is equipped with premium suspension and off-road components. Its powerful motor delivers 9,000 watts of peak power, equating to approximately 12 horsepower, comparable to a 125cc gasoline motorbike. A key advantage highlighted is its instantaneous throttle response and a weight reportedly half that of its internal combustion engine counterparts.
