The rollout of these pre-series vehicles represents a crucial step towards mass production for the highly anticipated electric 3 Series. “Production of pre-series vehicles is an important milestone for our plant,” stated Peter Weber, head of BMW’s Munich factory. “For the first time, we have built a BMW i3 entirely at our plant—using state-of-the-art manufacturing technology and digitally connected processes.”
Pre-Production: The Final Testing Phase

While camouflage obscures some details, observations reveal a front section with proportions resembling a front-wheel-drive sedan, with the front axle positioned closer to the A-pillar compared to the combustion 3 Series. This design may allow for an enlarged greenhouse, potentially enhancing cabin space and rear passenger room. The vehicle’s height appears well-managed, avoiding the more pronounced stance seen in larger electric models like the i5.
The wheels showcased on the pre-production models are likely to be among the options for the final production version. The sporty appearance, particularly the M Sport package elements such as revised bumpers and side skirts, suggests a focus on performance and aesthetics.
Interior and Platform Details Emerge
