The United Auto Workers (UAW) union has publicly declared its solidarity with Swedish union IF Metall, intensifying international attention on the protracted labor dispute with Tesla in Sweden. This move signals a widening pressure campaign as unions globally align with the striking workers.

UAW Voices Support for IF Metall’s Collective Bargaining Efforts

In a statement shared via social media, the UAW explicitly stated its support for IF Metall workers who are currently on strike against Tesla Sweden. UAW Region 8 Director Tim Smith affirmed the union’s complete backing of IF Metall’s objective to secure a collective bargaining agreement with the electric vehicle manufacturer.

“UAW stands with IF Metall workers on strike against Tesla, fighting for a collective bargaining agreement. UAW Region 8 Director Tim Smith pledged the UAW’s full support and solidarity,” the UAW International Union announced.

The strike, initiated by IF Metall in late 2023, stems from Tesla Sweden’s refusal to sign a collective agreement. The dispute has since seen expanded support from other unions through sympathy actions, impacting various logistical, port, and service operations related to Tesla.

Tesla Sweden has consistently maintained that it adheres to Swedish labor laws and provides competitive compensation and benefits. The company has not yet issued a public response regarding the UAW’s recent endorsement.

Union Tactics Extend to Tesla Owners in Sweden

Beyond actions directly targeting Tesla’s operations, pro-union groups in Sweden have broadened their outreach to engage directly with Tesla vehicle owners. Reports indicate that activists have been distributing informational leaflets on Tesla vehicles parked throughout Stockholm, aiming to inform the public about the ongoing labor conflict.

These leaflets, designed to resemble parking violation notices, encourage Tesla owners to urge the company to agree to a collective bargaining agreement. Organizers behind this initiative have stated that the leaflets serve as an informational tool rather than targeting individual owners. When owners are present, activists reportedly engage in verbal discussions to explain the dispute further.

As of now, Tesla has not publicly commented on the leaflet distribution campaign targeting its customers.
