Tesla CEO Elon Musk has officially confirmed that the company’s all-electric Class 8 Semi truck will begin high-volume production in 2026. The announcement was made via a post on the social media platform X.
Tesla Semi Production Ramp-Up
Musk’s assertion that “Tesla Semi starts high volume production this year” signals a significant progression for the electric long-haul vehicle. This update coincides with Tesla refreshing its official website for the Semi, adding detailed specifications for two distinct trim levels: Standard and Long Range. This move suggests the program is transitioning from limited pilot programs to broader commercial deployment.
Semi Trim Levels and Specifications
The Standard trim offers an estimated range of 325 miles. It boasts an energy consumption rating of 1.7 kWh per mile and is designed to handle a gross combination weight rating of 82,000 pounds. The Long Range version extends the driving range to approximately 500 miles. This variant has a slightly higher curb weight, noted at around 23,000 pounds, likely due to an enlarged battery pack.
Both configurations support rapid charging capabilities, with Tesla stating the Semi can regain up to 60% of its range in just 30 minutes, provided compatible charging infrastructure is available. The Long Range trim also features a peak charging speed of 1.2 MW.
Broader Commercial Rollout Expected
Tesla has already supplied production units of the Semi to key partners, including PepsiCo and logistics provider DHL. DHL has reported that its Tesla Semi is in daily operation in California, covering approximately 100 miles daily and requiring charging only about once a week.
The electric truck manufacturer has also established a partnership with Uber Freight, aiming to allow fleet operators to experience the Semi’s projected lower operating and maintenance costs firsthand. With Musk’s commitment to high-volume production, the Tesla Semi is poised to move beyond its initial pilot phases and enter scaled commercial use, marking a critical step in Tesla’s ambition to electrify the heavy-duty and long-range trucking sector.
