Global EV Leader BYD Set to Launch New Models with Extended Range

BYD, the world’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer, is poised to introduce new EV models this year boasting an impressive range exceeding 1,000 kilometers. The company has been actively testing advanced electric cars in China, featuring cutting-edge technology, including potential 1,000 kW charging capabilities.

Denza Z9 to Feature Long-Range LFP Blade Batteries

Regulatory approval documents filed with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) have revealed a new model from BYD’s premium brand, Denza, the upcoming Z9, which is slated to offer an extraordinary EV range of over 1,000 km. The Z9 will be equipped with two new battery options utilizing BYD’s lithium iron phosphate (LFP) blade battery technology. These batteries will have capacities of 102 kWh and 122 kWh, delivering a CLTC-rated range of up to 1,068 km with the larger battery. While this figure is based on the CLTC cycle, a range closer to 800 km can be anticipated on the WLTP cycle, commonly used in international markets.

Performance and Design Updates for the Z9

The top-spec Z9 GT variant will see a slight reduction in range to 1,002 km on the CLTC cycle, attributed to the inclusion of an additional motor in the tri-motor touring configuration. Regulatory information confirms that the model will be available in both single-motor and tri-motor versions. The single-motor variant will feature a 370 kW rear-wheel-drive setup, while the tri-motor version will achieve a combined power output of 850 kW.

Visually, the Z9 presents several styling enhancements while retaining its sleek touring wagon aesthetic. Innovations include new wheels and integrated roof lidar, designed to minimize cabin noise, alongside an advanced ‘God’s Eye’ smart driving system. Experiences with the current generation Z9 GT suggest a focus on comfort and long-distance touring rather than extreme sports car performance, a niche expected to be filled by the upcoming Denza two-door sports car, reportedly tested at a German race track in 2025.

BYD Accelerates Innovation for Global Market Entry

Over the past year, BYD has consistently rolled out significant innovations, including 1,000 kW charging technology for select models, its God’s Eye ADAS system, and now battery technology enabling over 1,000 km of range. As these advancements are scaled for production, BYD aims to accelerate their introduction into global markets. This strategic push is expected to provide a competitive advantage over established automakers and encourage more drivers of internal combustion engine vehicles to transition to electric mobility, particularly addressing concerns about range anxiety.
