Elon Musk has engaged in a public spat with Jimmy Wales, the co-founder of Wikipedia, over the perceived merits and future of xAI’s new AI-powered encyclopedia alternative, Grokipedia. The exchange began after Wales dismissed Grokipedia as a “ridiculous” and unworkable concept.
Wikipedia Co-founder’s Stance on Neutrality and Grok
Wales, a prominent figure in the internet’s history, emphasized Wikipedia’s foundational principle of neutrality during a recent discussion on social media. He stated, “One of our core values at Wikipedia is neutrality. A neutral point of view is non-negotiable. It’s in the community, unquestioned… The idea that we’ve become somehow ‘Wokepedia’ is just not true.”
When questioned about the emergence of Grokipedia as a potential competitor, Wales expressed skepticism. “There is no competition. I don’t know if anyone uses Grokipedia. I think it is a ridiculous idea that will never work,” he commented.
Musk’s Sharp Retort and Grok’s Early Assessment
In response to Wales’ strong dismissal, Musk took to his social media platform X with a succinct and defiant reply: “Famous last words.”
Adding another layer to the discourse, Larry Sanger, also a co-founder of Wikipedia, shared his initial impressions of Grokipedia. Sanger posted on X that his early assessment of the AI-powered alternative was “very OK.” He elaborated, “My initial impression, looking at my own article and poking around here and there, is that Grokipedia is very OK. The jury’s still out as to whether it’s actually better than Wikipedia. But at this point I would have to say ‘maybe!’”
Musk reacted positively to Sanger’s tempered praise, calling it “accurate.” He further asserted in a separate post that Grokipedia, even in its nascent V0.1 version, was already superior to Wikipedia.
Historical Context: Sanger’s Critique of Wikipedia
This exchange touches upon longstanding criticisms of Wikipedia’s editorial direction. Sanger has previously voiced concerns about the platform’s “Reliable sources/Perennial sources” framework. In a past appearance on the Tucker Carlson Show, he argued that this system disproportionately favors left-leaning publications, effectively sidelining more conservative sources.
Sanger’s critique suggests a perceived bias in how Wikipedia categorizes information and evaluates the credibility of its sources, a point of contention for those who advocate for a more balanced representation of diverse viewpoints.
Grokipedia’s Rapid Growth
Despite the debate, Grokipedia appears to be expanding its content base rapidly. Reports indicate that the AI has already surpassed 80% of English Wikipedia’s article count, signaling significant progress in its development and content aggregation efforts.
