Nashville’s Ambitious Transit Project Gains Momentum
Tennessee’s Department of Transportation (TDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) have granted a pivotal approval to Elon Musk’s The Boring Company, clearing a major regulatory hurdle for its planned Music City Loop in Nashville. This development allows the company to utilize state-owned land along the Tennessee highway system for its privately funded tunnel project.
Connecting Nashville with High-Speed Transit
The Music City Loop is designed to significantly reduce travel time between downtown Nashville and Nashville International Airport, promising a commute of approximately eight minutes. This approval marks a critical step forward in realizing that vision.
Governor Praises Innovation in Growth Management
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee highlighted the state’s commitment to innovative solutions for managing its rapid growth. “Tennessee continues to lead the nation in finding innovative solutions to accommodate growth, and in partnership with The Boring Company, we are exploring possibilities we couldn’t achieve on our own,” Governor Lee stated. The project is seen as a testament to private sector ingenuity addressing transportation challenges.
The Boring Company Expresses Gratitude and Excitement
Steve Davis, President of The Boring Company, conveyed gratitude towards the federal, state, and local agencies involved. “The Boring Company is grateful for the leadership and hard work of federal, state, and local agencies in bringing this project to a shovel-ready point,” Davis said. He added, “Music City Loop will be a safe, fast, and fun public transportation system, and we are excited to build it in Nashville.”
Thank you @GovBillLee!
We are grateful and excited to receive the @myTDOT permit to begin construction on Music City Loop. Thanks to the leadership and hard work of all federal, state, and local agencies in bringing this project to a shovel-ready point.

Construction Set to Begin on Music City Loop
With the necessary lease and permitting approvals now secured, The Boring Company is poised to commence construction on the Loop system immediately. The initial phase of the project is anticipated to be operational by the end of the current year.
Project Scope and Funding Details
The Music City Loop will operate through tunnels constructed beneath state-owned roadways. Its planned routes aim to connect key areas, including downtown to the airport, and lower Broadway to West End. Notably, the entire project will be financed through private investment, underscoring a public-private partnership model.
Federal Endorsement for Innovative Transit
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy lauded the project as an example of leveraging private sector innovation to solve transportation issues. “The Music City Loop shows what’s possible when we leverage private-sector innovation and American ingenuity to solve transportation challenges,” said Secretary Duffy. He further commented, “TDOT’s lease approval will help advance this ambitious project as we work to reduce congestion and make travel more seamless for the American people.”
Safety and Environmental Standards Emphasized
The Boring Company has characterized its Loop system as an all-electric, zero-emissions, high-speed underground transportation network designed to meet and exceed rigorous safety standards. As a point of reference, The Vegas Loop, another project by the company, reportedly achieved a 99.57% safety and security rating from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), reportedly the highest score ever awarded to a transportation system.
