Ionna, the electric vehicle (EV) DC fast charging network backed by a consortium of major automakers, is rapidly expanding its footprint across the United States and is on track to achieve a significant milestone: becoming the fastest-growing charging operator in its first year of operation. This aggressive build-out is set to surpass the initial growth rate of even established networks like Tesla’s Supercharger system.

Ionna Accelerates US Expansion

Company officials have announced plans to double the number of charging stations and stalls by the end of the current year. Currently, Ionna operates 51 locations nationwide, providing access to 478 charging ports. Projections indicate that by December 31, or in the early weeks of 2026, the network will reach a combined total of 100 sites and 1,000 charging bays. This rapid deployment was confirmed by Ionna officials speaking with Tom Moloughney, an InsideEVs contributor and host of State of Charge.

Milestone Achieved Ahead of Competitors

Launched in December of the previous year, Ionna has committed to installing 30,000 charging bays by 2030. The network has already secured contracts for over 4,000 bays, with the first 1,000 slated for imminent activation. For comparison, Tesla’s Supercharger network took 14 months to reach 81 global locations after its inception in November 2012, although Tesla later significantly accelerated its installation pace. The development of Ionna’s network is aided by the maturity of charging technology, with pre-fabricated stalls available from suppliers, a contrast to Tesla’s initial need to engineer its own solutions from the ground up.

Advanced Charging Infrastructure

The rapid growth of Ionna’s network is significant news for EV drivers. The company’s facilities, referred to as ‘Rechargeries,’ are noted for their high-quality amenities, including canopies and 400-kilowatt stalls equipped with both CCS and NACS cables. These stations are considered among the best DC fast-charging options available in the country.

Commitment Amidst Market Challenges

With support from nearly a dozen automotive manufacturers, Ionna is pressing forward with its expansion plans. Representatives from Ionna and its partner companies have emphasized the continued necessity of building out DC fast-charging infrastructure, regardless of fluctuations in the EV market, including the discontinuation of the $7,500 federal tax credit and a less favorable political climate for EVs.
