The London Borough of Harrow is significantly expanding its electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure with the rollout of 500 new on-street charge points, addressing a key challenge for urban EV drivers who lack dedicated off-street parking. This initiative is a collaboration with EV charging provider char.gy.

Lamp Column Charging Solutions

The newly installed charge points are integrated into existing lamp columns, offering a low-power charging solution. This type of charging is considered ideal for EV owners to top up their vehicles’ batteries overnight while parked at home.

Phased Rollout and Renewable Energy

A total of 225 charge points have already been installed, with the remaining 275 scheduled for deployment by October 2028. A key feature of this new infrastructure is its operation on 100% renewable electricity. The charging points also feature transparent pricing structures, including discounted rates for overnight usage.

Enhancing Urban EV Accessibility

David Ashton, Cabinet Member for Finance and Highways, highlighted the project’s focus on resident needs. “We’re putting residents first by making it easier to charge electric vehicles where people actually live,” Ashton stated. “More on-street charging means less time searching for a plug and more confidence for drivers every day.”

John Lewis, CEO of char.gy, emphasized the practical benefits for a wide range of EV users. “This expansion will make a real difference for everyday drivers: people who live without a driveway, those switching to electric for the first time, and anyone who wants reliable, affordable charging close to home,” Lewis said. “We look forward to working with the council, residents and local communities as these chargers go live.”

To inform and engage residents about the new charging facilities, the Borough of Harrow has released a short video detailing the project.
