Rivian’s electric vehicle owners are set to gain access to Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network in the United States and Canada starting in 2024. The electric adventure vehicle manufacturer announced that its R1T pickup and R1S SUV models will be compatible with Tesla’s DC fast chargers via an adapter. Furthermore, beginning in 2025, both models will come equipped with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector, eliminating the need for adapters.

Expanded Charging Access and Future Platforms

The agreement extends to future vehicles built on Rivian’s upcoming R2 platform, which is expected to underpin a series of more affordable EVs slated for release between 2025 and 2026. This strategic move significantly enhances charging options for Rivian customers, leveraging Tesla’s established infrastructure of over 12,000 Superchargers.

Continued Network Development and Industry Trend

Rivian confirmed it will continue to expand its proprietary Adventure Network of DC fast chargers nationwide. However, details regarding the plug type for future Adventure Network and Waypoints charging sites, as well as the fate of its existing Level 2 chargers with J1772 plugs, remain to be announced. A Rivian spokesperson stated, “We’ll share details about how the NACS will impact future Rivian Adventure Network and Waypoints sites in the future.”

RJ Scaringe, Founder and CEO of Rivian, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “We’re excited to work with Tesla and to see collaborations like this help advance the world toward carbon neutrality. The adoption of the North American Charging Standard will enable our existing and future customers to leverage Tesla’s expansive Supercharger network while we continue to build out our Rivian Adventure Network. We look forward to continuing to find new ways to accelerate EV adoption.”

This development follows a trend of major automakers and charging providers embracing Tesla’s NACS. Ford was the first to announce a similar deal, followed by General Motors and several other charging technology companies, underscoring a growing industry consensus around the charging standard.

Rebecca Tinucci, Tesla’s Senior Director of Charging Infrastructure, welcomed the partnership, commenting, “It’s great to see the industry coming together to adopt the North American Charging Standard. By doing so, we’re collectively ensuring all EV drivers have access to easy to use, reliable charging hardware. We look forward to welcoming Rivian owners to thousands of our Superchargers across North America.”
