Spanish Bike Brand MMR Takes on Trails with New Kaizen E-MTB

The versatile Kaizen e-MTB is designed for cross-country and all-mountain riding, featuring a lightweight build and the new Bosch Performance Line SX motor.

In the rapidly evolving world of electric bicycles, where powerful motors and advanced technology often dominate headlines, a growing segment focuses on preserving the authentic feel of traditional cycling. These e-bikes aim to enhance rides by extending range and reducing fatigue without sacrificing the engaging experience of pedaling. This philosophy is particularly evident in the lightweight e-MTB and electric gravel bike categories, where motors like the Bosch Performance Line SX, introduced in 2023, are prized for their natural pedal feel and efficiency.

Joining the ranks of manufacturers embracing this trend is Spanish bicycle specialist MMR, with the unveiling of its latest model: the Kaizen. Directly inspired by its non-electric counterpart, the Kenta, the Kaizen is engineered as a lightweight electric mountain bike, poised to tackle both cross-country trails and demanding all-mountain terrain.

Lightweight Powerhouse: The Bosch SX Advantage

At the heart of the Kaizen lies the new Bosch Performance Line SX motor. This compact unit weighs just two kilograms and delivers a focused 55 Nm of torque. While less powerful than its larger CX sibling (which offers 85 Nm), the SX motor’s efficiency and subtle power delivery are key to the Kaizen’s design. This focus on a lighter, more integrated system allows MMR to achieve an impressive overall weight for the Kaizen, tipping the scales at a mere 16.7 kilograms (approximately 36.8 pounds).

Balanced Power and Extended Range

Complementing the efficient motor is the compact Bosch PowerTube 400 battery. This smaller capacity aligns with the motor’s lower power output, contributing to the bike’s lightweight profile. For riders seeking to push their limits further, the Kaizen also supports an optional 250-watt-hour range extender, thoughtfully integrated to ensure there’s still space for a standard frame-mounted water bottle.

Trail-Ready Geometry and Wheelset

The Kaizen features a modern geometry designed for confident handling. With 29-inch wheels front and rear, it leans towards the responsiveness and speed characteristic of cross-country bikes. The suspension offers a capable 140 millimeters of travel both front and rear, complemented by a slack 66-degree head angle, which enhances stability and control on technical descents. This contemporary setup is further refined by a long reach and a short stem, providing riders with increased leverage and an athletic riding position that hints at its XC racing pedigree.

Build Configurations and Pricing

MMR is offering the Kaizen in five distinct build configurations to cater to a range of preferences and budgets. The entry-level model starts at an MSRP of 5,999 euros (approximately $6,541 USD). This base configuration is well-appointed, featuring a reliable Shimano XT/Deore drivetrain and Fox Performance 34 suspension. As buyers move up the range, componentry sees significant upgrades, culminating in the top-tier model. This premium build boasts plush Fox Factory suspension and the high-performance Sram XX SL T-Type drivetrain, priced at 7,199 euros (around $7,849 USD).
