Tesla has launched a new iteration of its popular Model Y electric SUV in the United Kingdom, offering an extended driving range for consumers. The updated model, known as the ‘Model Y Rear Wheel Drive Long Range’, was announced by Tesla UK via its official X (formerly Twitter) account.
New Long-Range Variant for the UK
This new addition to the UK lineup follows the release of Tesla’s longest-range Model Y in China during November, which boasted up to 821 km of CLTC range. The UK’s ‘Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive’ version is positioned as a more accessible option compared to premium variants.
According to Tesla UK’s post, the vehicle offers an estimated 383 miles (approximately 616 km) of WLTP range. The electric SUV also features an energy consumption rate of 13.6 kWh per 100km and comes equipped with 19-inch Crossflow wheels as standard. Pricing for this variant begins at £44,990, representing a roughly 10% increase over the standard-range, rear-wheel-drive Model Y.
Performance and Efficiency Details
The Model Y Long Range RWD variant is capable of reaching a top speed of 201 km/h. Its rear-mounted motor enables acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds. While the UK version achieves 616 km of WLTP range, this is a slight reduction compared to the same model available in other European markets. Last month, the European variant was reported to deliver 657 km of WLTP range and an efficiency of 12.7 kWh/100km.
The difference in range and efficiency for the UK model is attributed, in part, to the larger 19-inch wheels. These specifications were previously hinted at last month through leaks within European regulatory frameworks, identified by user eivissacopter on X.
Battery Pack Insights
Leaked specifications suggest the new model incorporates a 74 kWh battery pack. While the specific chemistry remains undisclosed, it is noted to be approximately 31 kg lighter than the Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery packs currently used in other Model Y configurations.
Market Availability and Future Prospects
The Model Y Long Range RWD is now available for purchase in the UK. However, its availability in other right-hand drive markets, such as Australia and New Zealand, has not yet been confirmed. In Australia, Tesla currently offers three Model Y variants: Premium Rear-Wheel Drive, Premium Long Range All-Wheel Drive, and Performance All-Wheel Drive, with prices starting at $58,900 AUD for the RWD model.
For customers in the UK seeking long-range capabilities while awaiting potential future introductions, the Model Y Premium Long Range AWD, offering 600 km of range, is currently available for order, with deliveries expected shortly after purchase.
