Tesla has unveiled crucial details regarding its all-electric Semi truck as the vehicle gears up for “mass production” later this year, according to CEO Elon Musk. This significant update follows years of development, pilot programs, and the establishment of a dedicated manufacturing facility for the truck.

Trim Levels and Performance Details Emerge

While Tesla has historically kept certain specifications under wraps, the impending mass production has prompted the company to release key information, including trim levels and their respective performance metrics. The company plans to offer two distinct versions: a Standard Range and a Long Range model. Although the battery sizes for these trims are yet to be disclosed, new spec sheets highlight a notable weight difference of approximately 3,000 lbs between them. The Long Range variant boasts an impressive peak charging speed of 1.2 MW, a figure not yet available for the Standard Range model.

Tesla Semi Specifications Revealed

The detailed specifications for both Tesla Semi trims are as follows:

  • Standard Range:
    • Range: 325 miles (at 82,000 lbs gross combination weight)
    • Curb Weight: Less than 20,000 lbs
    • Energy Consumption: 1.7 kWh per mile
    • Powertrain: 3 independent motors on rear axles
    • Charging: Up to 60% of range in 30 minutes
    • Charge Type: MCS 3.2
    • Drive Power: Up to 800 kW
    • ePTO (Electric Power Take Off): Up to 25 kW
  • Long Range:
    • Range: 500 miles (at 82,000 lbs gross combination weight)
    • Curb Weight: 23,000 lbs
    • Energy Consumption: 1.7 kWh per mile
    • Powertrain: 3 independent motors on rear axles
    • Charging: Up to 60% of range in 30 minutes
    • Charge Type: MCS 3.2
    • Peak charging speed: 1.2 MW (1,200 kW)
    • Drive Power: Up to 800 kW
    • ePTO (Electric Power Take Off): Up to 25 kW

Initial Focus on Regional Deliveries

It is important to note that the current specifications for the Tesla Semi are geared towards regional transportation needs. The company has not yet released or developed a sleeper cabin configuration, which would be essential for long-haul, cross-country, or overnight journeys. Consequently, the vehicle will initially be deployed for regional deliveries, building upon its successful use in pilot programs with companies like PepsiCo and Frito-Lay over the past several years.

Mass Production Confirmed

Elon Musk confirmed on X over the weekend that the Tesla Semi will enter mass production this year. The establishment of Tesla’s dedicated Semi production facility in Sparks, Nevada, lends significant credibility to this timeline, especially after previous adjustments to the vehicle’s mass manufacturing date.
