Transport for London (TfL) has awarded a significant contract to the energy giant TotalEnergies, tasking the company with the deployment of up to 43 new DC fast electric vehicle (EV) chargers throughout the capital. This initiative aims to bolster London’s electric vehicle infrastructure, providing vital charging solutions for a growing number of EV users.
Expanding London’s Rapid EV Charging Network
The newly commissioned chargers will offer charging speeds of either 100 kW or 200 kW, categorized by TfL as “rapid” or “ultra-rapid.” These high-speed charging points are strategically planned for locations that serve high-mileage commercial users, as well as areas near high streets and local amenities. This placement ensures accessibility and convenience for a wide range of EV drivers.
A notable concentration of these new charging sites will be established in south London, with planned installations in boroughs including Bromley, Lewisham, and Sutton. This focus aims to address specific regional needs and enhance EV charging availability in these areas.
A Growing Partnership with TotalEnergies
This contract marks the second major agreement between TfL and TotalEnergies. It builds upon the existing collaboration, which includes TfL’s work with EV charge point operator Zest. Through that partnership, approximately 40 on-street rapid or ultra-rapid EV charging bays have already been delivered for TfL across the city.
London’s Ambitious EV Charging Landscape
London is already a leading city in terms of public EV charging provision. According to TfL data, the capital currently boasts over 27,980 public charging points. Of these, more than 1,550 provide “rapid or ultra-rapid charging” capabilities, underscoring the city’s commitment to facilitating EV adoption.
The demand for EV charging infrastructure in London is projected to rise significantly. TfL forecasts that if current trends continue, the city will require between 43,000 and 51,000 charge points by the year 2030 to meet anticipated demand.
TfL’s Strategic Approach to Infrastructure Development
TfL is actively collaborating with the Greater London Authority (GLA) Group and other public sector partners to facilitate the installation of EV chargers on public land. This cooperative approach leverages public assets to accelerate the rollout of essential charging infrastructure.
Places for London, TfL’s wholly-owned real estate company, is playing a key role in this strategy. It has partnered with EV charging hub operator Fastned to develop several new ultra-rapid EV charging hubs across its property portfolio. One such project is already underway at TfL’s Hatton Cross Station car park, which is intended to be the first of 25 such hubs TfL aims to deliver by 2030.
Ensuring Confidence in EV Transition
David Rowe, Director of Investment Planning at TfL, emphasized the importance of these developments. “By unlocking our land to bring new EV bays forward, we’re working with both TotalEnergies and Zest to provide the infrastructure that Londoners need to have the confidence to transition to electric vehicles,” he stated.
This expansion of the charging network, supported by partnerships with major energy firms and specialized charging operators, is crucial for enabling more Londoners to confidently make the switch to electric mobility.
