Tesla’s advanced driver-assistance system, Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised, will transition to a subscription-only model in Australia and New Zealand starting April 2026. This change follows a global shift announced by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who indicated the company would cease selling the FSD package outright.
Subscription Model Takes Over
From March 31, 2026, new Tesla customers in Australia and New Zealand will no longer have the option to purchase FSD Supervised as a permanent upgrade for their vehicles. Instead, access to the technology will be exclusively through a monthly subscription service.
Options for Existing and New Owners
Existing owners of Tesla vehicles equipped with Hardware 4 (HW4) will have until March 31, 2026, to purchase FSD Supervised as an outright upgrade via the Tesla app. However, after this date, this option will be discontinued.
Furthermore, Tesla is ending the transferability of both Enhanced Autopilot and FSD Supervised features as of March 31, 2026. These features will not be available for future transfers.
FSD Development and Local Rollout
Tesla has been developing its FSD technology for several years. The supervised version was recently rolled out in Australia and New Zealand, marking these as the first right-hand-drive markets globally to receive the technology.
In January, Elon Musk confirmed the upcoming shift, stating on X, “Tesla will stop selling FSD after Feb 14. FSD will only be available as a monthly subscription thereafter.” This announcement primarily pertained to the US market, where the change is effective immediately.
In Australia and New Zealand, FSD Supervised was launched on September 18, 2025. Initially, it was offered as an optional upgrade for all new vehicles at a price of $10,100. A monthly subscription option, starting at $149 per month, was introduced shortly thereafter.
The subscription model has already encouraged a significant number of current Tesla owners to trial FSD Supervised. It is important to note that the software is not currently compatible with older, Hardware 3-equipped vehicles, meaning owners of these cars are not eligible for the subscription service.
Market Reception and Future Outlook
Tesla has reported that its FSD Supervised system has accumulated over 1 million kilometers in usage by owners across Australia and New Zealand, indicating growing interest in the technology.
With the subscription model becoming the sole offering in Australia and New Zealand in early 2026, the uptake of FSD Supervised will be closely watched. The company’s ongoing commitment to autonomy suggests that further evolution of the software is expected in the local market.
