Melbourne, Australia – BP Pulse, the electric vehicle (EV) charging arm of global energy giant BP, has officially broken ground on its inaugural large-scale charging facility in Australia. This ambitious project, a 24-bay EV charging hub situated within the bustling precinct of Melbourne Airport, is slated for completion later this year, marking a significant step in bolstering the nation’s burgeoning EV infrastructure.

The state-of-the-art facility is designed to cater to a diverse range of electric vehicles, featuring a robust array of 150-kilowatt (kW) and 300-kW chargers. Emphasizing inclusivity and convenience, the hub will also include two accessible bays and several drive-through bays specifically designed to accommodate larger vehicles. Enhancing the user experience further, the site will incorporate essential amenities such as a bathroom and a protective canopy, ensuring comfort regardless of weather conditions.

It is located at the prominent corner of Airport Drive and Francis Briggs Road, an area known for its high traffic flow. The hub will be nestled between a DHL depot and the Melrose Lounge, offering easy access to the existing Value Car Park and the Melbourne Airport Wait Zone and Ring & Ride areas. This prime placement is intended to provide maximum convenience for a wide array of users, from daily commuters to long-haul travellers.

Antoine Denis, General Manager of BP Pulse Australia, underscored the strategic intent behind the location. “Conveniently positioned in the Melbourne Airport precinct, we want to ensure this charging hub offers a quick and seamless way for drivers to recharge and get back on the road,” he stated, highlighting the company’s commitment to user-friendly electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

Pioneering Sustainable Energy Integration

A notable feature of the new Melbourne Airport EV charging hub is its commitment to sustainability. The entire operation will be powered by 100 per cent renewable electricity. This green energy will be sourced directly from Melbourne Airport’s two established onsite solar farms, aligning with global efforts to decarbonise the transport sector and integrate clean energy solutions into critical infrastructure projects.

Jai McDermott, Melbourne Airport’s Chief of Ground Transport, Property, and Retail, expressed enthusiasm for this partnership. “Not only will this be the first of its scale at an Australian airport, but we’re proud that BP Pulse has chosen to power the hub with 100 per cent renewable electricity generated from Melbourne Airport’s two onsite solar farms,” McDermott remarked, signalling the airport’s dedication to environmental stewardship.

Since its launch in 2022, BP Pulse has rapidly established a robust network, installing over 290 EV charging bays nationwide. Mr. Denis elaborated on the global expertise underpinning this local initiative. “Since 2022 we’ve been building a network of EV charging sites around the country to support our customers on the road to electrification. Now, with the backing of over 41,000 BP Pulse charging bays across the world, we’re leveraging our global EV charging expertise to bring bp pulse’s first large-scale charging hub to Australia,” he affirmed.

Benefiting Diverse User Groups

With Melbourne Airport being Australia’s second busiest aviation hub, attracting approximately 34,000 vehicles daily, the new EV charging hub is poised to serve a wide demographic. The facility will be instrumental in supporting professional drivers, local businesses, travellers, and residents who rely on electric vehicles.

Furthermore, the hub is expected to be particularly beneficial for EV-owning Uber drivers, who can leverage a specific Uber EV charging discount, offering a base reduction of 5-8 cents per kilowatt-hour (c/kWh).
