A prominent Tesla enthusiast and analyst at Wedbush Securities, Dan Ives, has indicated a growing likelihood of a merger between Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI within the next 12 to 18 months. This perspective follows Elon Musk’s recent confirmation of a strategic alignment between SpaceX and his artificial intelligence startup, xAI.
Analyst Foresees Integrated AI Ecosystem
In a social media post on Tuesday, Ives articulated his view that the potential merger could lead to the integration of Tesla into the broader SpaceX/xAI ecosystem. He suggested that this consolidation would foster a unified AI environment focused on both terrestrial and extraterrestrial applications. “In our view there is a growing chance that Tesla will eventually be merged in some form into SpaceX/xAI over time. The view is this growing AI ecosystem will focus on Space and Earth together…..and Musk will look to combine forces,” Ives stated.
SpaceX and xAI Announce Merger Details
Ives’ comments were prompted by Elon Musk’s announcement late Monday confirming that SpaceX and xAI have merged. Musk described the union as creating a vertically integrated platform that encompasses AI, rocket technology, satellite internet, communications, and real-time data capabilities. According to a post on SpaceX’s official website, the combined entity aims to facilitate space-based AI computation, with projections suggesting that space could become the most cost-effective environment for AI processing power within two to three years. The reported valuation of the merged SpaceX-xAI entity is approximately $1.25 trillion.
Tesla’s Investment in xAI and Potential Merger Hurdles
Tesla has already demonstrated its commitment to xAI, having announced a $2 billion investment in the AI startup in its Q4 and FY 2025 update letter. However, potential merger discussions are not without significant complexities. A report from Investors Business Daily highlights potential challenges, including SpaceX’s substantial U.S. government contracts with entities like the Department of Defense and NASA, and xAI’s Grok chatbot being utilized by the U.S. Department of War. Concurrently, Tesla operates extensive facilities in China, including Gigafactory Shanghai and its Megapack plant, which could present geopolitical considerations.
