Commercial electric vehicle manufacturer Harbinger has officially unveiled its new HC Series Cab, a medium-duty, low cab forward (LCF) work truck designed to cater to a range of industrial needs. This innovative vehicle is available in two distinct configurations: fully electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV).
Designed for Versatility and Efficiency
The new HC Series Cab is engineered to offer significant improvements in maneuverability, driver comfort, safety, and overall operational cost savings. A key feature highlighted by Harbinger is its capability to function as a mobile power station, providing sustained power for tools and equipment on job sites for extended durations.
Boasting a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,000 pounds, the HC Series Cab is adaptable to a wide array of upfit requirements. This includes options for standard cargo boxes, stake beds, flatbeds, and other specialized body types. The LCF architecture is a significant advantage, allowing for longer cargo boxes to be fitted onto shorter wheelbases. This translates into increased usable cargo volume for fleets without extending the vehicle’s overall length, enhancing practicality in urban and confined operational environments.
Harbinger’s Strategic Approach to Commercial EVs
In a market where many commercial EV startups have faced significant challenges, Harbinger, a five-year-old company, reports consistent sales growth. CEO John Harris attributes this sustained success to the company’s strategic focus on specialization and vertical integration. Harbinger concentrates exclusively on selling stripped chassis in Classes 4, 5, and 6. This segment, according to Harris, is ideally suited for current electrification technology, offering a cost-effective and fit-for-purpose solution with limited direct competition.
A core element of Harbinger’s strategy is its commitment to building all its trucks from the ground up on a proprietary, vertically integrated electric architecture. This approach contrasts sharply with vehicles that are merely retrofitted from traditional internal combustion engine platforms. Harbinger’s electric chassis encompasses all major vehicle systems, including the powertrain, battery system, steering, and brakes, all designed and manufactured in-house.
“This vertically integrated approach keeps costs low and provides a higher-performing, safer, and more durable solution than electric vehicles built upon legacy diesel and gasoline platforms,” the company stated in its announcement. This internal control over critical components aims to ensure quality, performance, and reliability.
Hybrid Option Offers Extended Range and Onboard Power
For fleets requiring extended operational range, Harbinger offers a range-extended hybrid platform. This system utilizes a gasoline engine to recharge the batteries, enabling a potential range of up to 500 miles. The actual range is contingent upon the specific upfit configuration and the driving cycle. An additional benefit of the hybrid system is its ability to recharge batteries while the vehicle is parked, even without external power sources.
The platform is designed to support full power take-off (PTO) functionality, crucial for operating hydraulic systems and other body-mounted equipment essential for various work tasks. Harbinger is also introducing an onboard AC inverter option across both EV and hybrid models. This inverter can deliver up to 15 kW of exportable power, allowing work crews to directly power external tools and job site equipment from the vehicle itself, further enhancing its utility.
A Defining Moment for Medium-Duty Vehicles
Harbinger CEO John Harris expressed strong confidence in the new HC Series Cab, calling it a significant advancement. “The HC Series Cab represents a major expansion of our product line and a defining moment for the medium-duty industry,” Harris said. He emphasized the common compromises fleets have historically faced.
“For too long, fleets have had to compromise between payload, maneuverability, range and onboard capability,” he continued. “We engineered this platform to outperform legacy diesel options while unlocking new advantages through electrification and our range-extended hybrid system to enable real work in the field.”
The introduction of the HC Series Cab signifies Harbinger’s ambition to address unmet needs in the medium-duty work truck market, offering a blend of electrification benefits with practical, real-world operational capabilities for commercial fleets.
