In a significant move to bolster electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, Kroger, one of the largest supermarket operators in the United States, has announced a major expansion of its EV charging capabilities. The retail giant has partnered with EVgo, a leading public fast charging network, to deploy thousands of new DC fast chargers across its vast network of stores over the next decade.
Convenience Meets Charging: A Nationwide Rollout
This ambitious collaboration aims to integrate essential EV charging amenities directly into the everyday shopping experience for millions of Americans. The first new charging site is already operational in Salt Lake City, Utah, at a Smith’s Food and Drug location. Future installations are planned for key states including Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Texas, and Washington, with Kroger stores nationwide set to benefit from this upgrade.
What to Expect: Speed and Scale
Under the agreement, EVgo is committed to installing at least 150 fast charging stalls annually through 2035. These new stations will be strategically located at various Kroger-owned banners, including Kroger, Foods Co., Fred Meyer, Fry’s Food Stores, Harris Teeter, King Soopers, and Smith’s Food and Drug. Each site is expected to feature up to 16 high-power DC fast charging stalls, capable of providing a significant charge to an EV’s battery in as little as 15 minutes.
While the exact power output of all chargers wasn’t specified, the initial Salt Lake City installation boasts 12 350-kilowatt chargers, capable of serving up to 24 vehicles concurrently. These chargers utilize CCS1 connectors, with EVgo also offering chargers equipped with NACS connectors.
A Win for EV Drivers and the Environment
Badar Khan, CEO of EVgo, highlighted the strategic advantage of this partnership. “EVgo’s expanded relationship with Kroger introduces more fast charging options into Americans’ everyday lives,” Khan stated. “Kroger is the grocery destination of choice for millions of Americans. Adding fast charging to Kroger locations will provide the growing number of EV drivers an essential amenity – the convenience of charging where they shop while empowering drivers with the freedom to choose electric.”
EVgo’s Rapid Expansion
This initiative aligns with EVgo’s aggressive growth strategy. Currently operating approximately 4,800 DC fast charging stalls nationwide, the company has ambitious plans to more than triple its footprint, aiming for over 15,000 stalls by the end of 2029. To accelerate this expansion, EVgo is collaborating with other industry players, including GM Energy and Pilot Company, and employing innovative solutions like prefabricated slabs for faster installations.
The integration of fast charging at accessible locations like Kroger stores is a crucial step in making electric vehicle ownership more practical and appealing to a broader audience, further accelerating the transition to cleaner transportation.
