Tesla is on the cusp of beginning production for its next-generation humanoid robot, Optimus 3, with CEO Elon Musk projecting initial manufacturing runs could start as early as this summer. Musk described the forthcoming robot as the world’s most advanced, asserting that no other robot currently rivals its capabilities.

Optimus 3 Poised for Summer Production Launch

In a recent interview at the Abundance Summit, Elon Musk shared significant updates on the Tesla Optimus program. He indicated that Optimus 3 is in the final stages of development and is expected to enter production this summer. While initial production volumes will be modest, Musk anticipates reaching high-volume manufacturing by the summer of 2027.

“We’re in the final stages of completion of Optimus 3, which is really going to be by far the most advanced robot in the world. Nothing’s even close. In fact, I haven’t even seen demos of robots that are as good as Optimus 3,” Musk stated during the summit.

The pace of production ramp-up for Optimus 3 is expected to follow a classic S-curve model, characteristic of complex manufacturing processes. This approach allows for gradual scaling while addressing potential challenges.

Annual Design Iterations Planned for Optimus

Tesla’s vision for Optimus extends beyond a single model. Musk revealed plans for rapid iteration, with a new robot design slated for release each year. Optimus 4 is already in development, with its design anticipated to be completed next year.

“We’ll have Optimus 4 design complete next year. We’ll try to release a new robot design every year,” Musk said, underscoring Tesla’s commitment to continuous improvement in humanoid robotics.

Ambitious Scaling Plans for Optimus Production

Tesla has outlined ambitious plans for scaling Optimus production across its manufacturing footprint. Initial production lines are set to be established at Tesla’s Fremont Factory in California, with the goal of creating a line capable of producing up to one million robots annually.

A significantly larger production ramp is planned for Gigafactory Texas. Musk has previously suggested this facility could eventually support the production of up to 10 million robots per year. This expansion signifies Tesla’s intent to position Optimus as a mass-produced product.

“We’re going to launch on the fastest production ramp of any product of any large complex manufactured product ever, starting with building a one-million-unit production line in Fremont. And that’s Line one. And then a ten million unit per year production line here,” Musk had previously stated, highlighting the scale of the undertaking.

The sequential rollout, starting with Optimus 3 at Fremont and potentially scaling up with Optimus 4 at Gigafactory Texas, suggests a phased approach to achieving Tesla’s high-volume production targets for its humanoid robot venture.

The development and upcoming production of Optimus 3 mark a significant milestone in Tesla’s expansion beyond electric vehicles and into the field of advanced robotics, aiming to create a general-purpose humanoid robot capable of performing a wide range of tasks.
