Tesla Model Y L Now Available for Order in Australia
Tesla has officially opened orders for its highly anticipated six-seater Model Y L in Australia. This new variant boasts a significantly longer range and a lower-than-expected price point, positioning it as a compelling option in the electric SUV market.
The Model Y L is now listed on Tesla’s Australian configurator, offering substantial enhancements over existing Model Y models. It features nearly 14 percent more range than any other Model Y variant currently available, coupled with increased interior space thanks to its longer, three-row SUV configuration.
Competitive Pricing and Extended Range
Crucially, the pricing for this new Model Y variant starts at $74,900 before on-road costs. This figure falls below market expectations and establishes it as the most affordable three-row electric SUV in Australia that accommodates more than five passengers.
The Model Y L also marks a significant technological advancement for Tesla in Australia, being the first electric vehicle from the manufacturer to incorporate Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology. This feature offers a 3.3 kW discharge rate, enabling the vehicle to power external devices.
Equipped with a substantial Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) battery pack, the Model Y L delivers an impressive range of 681 km when fitted with 19-inch wheels. This figure represents an over 13 percent increase in range compared to the current Dual-Motor Long Range model sold in Australia, making it the longest-range Model Y to date.
Performance and Safety Features
Under the hood, the Model Y L features an all-wheel-drive powertrain capable of generating up to 378 kW of power and 590 Nm of torque. This setup allows the large SUV to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5 seconds, with a top speed of 201 km/h.
In terms of safety, the Model Y L is poised to be among the safest family SUVs available, having secured a 5-star ANCAP rating prior to its local market arrival.
Enhanced Interior and Audio System
The new variant also comes equipped with Tesla’s premium audio system, featuring 18 speakers and a subwoofer. This represents an upgrade from the 15 speakers found in the Long Range and Performance variants of other Model Y vehicles.
Locally, the Model Y L will be offered with five exterior paint colour options and one interior trim choice. The available paint colours include Diamond Black ($1,500), Glacier Blue ($1,500), Stealth Grey ($1,900), Cosmic Silver ($2,600), and Ultra Red ($2,600). The interior will feature Zen Grey trim, also priced at $1,500.
Delivery Timeline and Market Context
Customers can place orders for the latest Model Y variant through Tesla Australia’s configurator, with the first customer deliveries anticipated in the second quarter of 2026.
This introduction follows the successful launch of the new six-seater Model Y L in China in August of the previous year. The model experienced significant demand from Chinese buyers seeking a spacious, family-oriented, six-seater electric SUV from Tesla.
Innovative Seating Configuration
The Model Y L introduces a distinct seating configuration compared to the standard Model Y, which itself received a refresh earlier in 2025. A notable comfort feature for front occupants includes adjustable headrests.
The second row is a key differentiator, featuring two “captain’s chairs” equipped with retractable armrests. These captain’s chairs offer enhanced space and comfort compared to the standard Model Y’s second-row bench.
The operation of these armrests is facilitated through the rear seat screen or a dedicated button located on the side of the seat cushion, providing a unique convenience feature exclusive to the Model Y L.
Third-Row Access and Cargo Capacity
The rear section of the cabin houses a third row with two seats and integrated cup holders on either side, offering adequate space for third-row occupants.
For increased practicality, the second and third-row seats in the Model Y L can be folded down using convenient buttons located in the boot. This configuration unlocks a substantial cargo space exceeding 2,530 litres, a considerable volume within the mid-size SUV segment.
This generous cargo capacity is partly attributed to the vehicle’s extended wheelbase, which is 177 mm longer than that of a standard Model Y. This increase in wheelbase contributes to the vehicle’s overall length, bringing it close to 5 metres.
Ride and Handling
On the road, the Model Y L incorporates continuously variable dampers, a technology also found in the Model 3 and Model Y Performance variants, suggesting a focus on ride quality and adaptive handling.
