China’s vehicle exports reached 7.1 million in 2025. EVs, including both BEVs and plug-in hybrids, constituted around 40% of these exports. Notably, approximately two-thirds of global plug-in sales are produced in China, though the majority of this production is sold domestically. The period between 2020 and 2025 saw a stark increase in China’s vehicle exports, indicating a trajectory of growing global influence.

Australian Market Reflects Global Trends

The Australian automotive market has also shown an increasing trend towards vehicles manufactured in China, particularly from 2024 to 2025. This surge has impacted imports from traditional sources like Germany, Korea, Thailand, and Japan. While Professor Wills’ data includes all vehicle types, the trend is even more pronounced in the BEV segment.

Dominance in Australian BEV Sales

In Australia’s BEV sales for January 2026, vehicles manufactured outside China are scarce. The first non-Chinese manufactured vehicle, excluding Tesla Model Y Performance variants produced in Berlin, appears as the Toyota bZ4X in 13th place. Chinese companies also dominate ownership, securing 8 out of the top 10 spots for January sales, with the Tesla Model Y and Kia EV5 being the only sales from non-Chinese owned brands.
