A new contender has entered the European electric truck market, with Chinese startup SuperPanther announcing plans to begin selling its electric semi-trucks in the region this year. The company will leverage a contract manufacturing agreement with Steyr Automotive in Austria for its European production.

European Production Kick-off Planned for Summer

According to Frank Schulz, SuperPanther’s Europe sales chief, series production is slated to commence this summer. SuperPanther aims to deliver between 100 and 200 customer vehicles across Europe by the close of 2026. This move marks the company’s first foray into export markets, as it already operates with “several hundred electric trucks” in its home country, China.

Focus on Performance and Total Cost of Ownership

SuperPanther, established in Xiamen, China, four years ago, aims to differentiate itself from the typical perception of Chinese manufacturers by focusing on quality and value rather than low prices. Schulz emphasized that the company does not intend to be a “price breaker.” Instead, SuperPanther plans to compete by offering superior performance, added value, and a compelling Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for its European clientele.

To support its European operations, SuperPanther will provide comprehensive services, including integrated charging solutions, whether developed in-house or through partnerships. Additionally, repair and maintenance will be managed through a collaboration with Alltrucks, a provider independent of specific vehicle brands.

SuperPanther’s eTopas 600: Key Specifications

The flagship model for the European market will be the SuperPanther eTopas 600. This vehicle is built on a dedicated battery-electric vehicle (BEV) platform, designed exclusively for electric powertrains. It is configured as a 4×2 tractor unit, featuring an unladen weight of 10.8 tons and a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of 42 tons.

Advanced Battery Technology and Powertrain

The eTopas 600 incorporates battery technology sourced from CATL, utilizing a system similar to that found in Daimler Trucks’ eActros 600. The truck is equipped with LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery packs offering a substantial gross capacity of 621 kWh. This capacity is projected to enable a driving range of approximately 500 kilometers on a single charge.

The vehicle operates on an 876-volt architecture, facilitating efficient power delivery. In its twin-engine configuration, the eTopas 600 delivers a continuous power output of 394 kW, with a peak power capability of 692 kW. This powertrain configuration is designed to meet the demanding requirements of long-haul trucking.

Charging Capabilities

SuperPanther’s electric truck is designed with advanced charging capabilities to minimize downtime. It features dual CCS-2 charging ports, which are capable of supporting extra-high charging speeds when connected to compatible charging infrastructure. Furthermore, the eTopas 600 is slated to be equipped with a Megawatt Charging System (MCS) port, signaling readiness for future ultra-fast charging technologies.

European Supply Chain Integration

Steyr Automotive will assemble the trucks using pre-assembled modules. While core components will be shipped from China, the manufacturing process will also integrate parts from various European suppliers. Notable European partners include ZF, Schaeffler, Continental, and Aumovio, underscoring a commitment to a localized European supply chain.

SuperPanther has maintained in-house development for critical systems, including the e-axles, thermal management systems, and the software layer. The company also indicated plans to offer these proprietary solutions to third-party manufacturers in the future.

Logistics Giant DHL Identified as Potential Customer

In a significant development, logistics leader DHL has been identified as a potential early customer for SuperPanther’s electric trucks. The two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in 2024, indicating a strong interest from DHL in the capabilities and potential deployment of SuperPanther’s vehicles within their extensive logistics network.

The entry of SuperPanther into the European market, supported by Steyr Automotive’s manufacturing expertise and a focus on performance and comprehensive service, signals a growing competition and diversification within the commercial electric vehicle sector.
