SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell has announced that xAI, Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, will develop 1.2 gigawatts (GW) of power for its planned AI supercomputer site in the Memphis area. This significant commitment is part of the White House’s new “Ratepayer Protection Pledge,” aimed at addressing the growing energy demands of AI infrastructure.

Commitment Made at White House Event

The pledge was officially revealed during a White House event attended by United States President Donald Trump. Shotwell detailed xAI’s plans to construct a substantial energy installation at its AI data center, located on the Tennessee-Mississippi state line, to meet the facility’s considerable power requirements.

“As you know, xAI builds huge supercomputers and data centers and we build them fast,” Shotwell stated at the event. “Currently, we’re building one on the Tennessee-Mississippi state line. As part of today’s commitment, we will take extensive additional steps to continue to reduce the costs of electricity for our neighbors…”

Developing Significant Power Infrastructure

Shotwell further elaborated on the scale of the energy project. “xAI will therefore commit to develop 1.2 GW of power as our supercomputer’s primary power source. That will be for every additional data center as well. We will expand what is already the largest global Megapack power installation in the world,” she explained.

This ambitious power development is expected to provide more than just the operational needs of the AI data center. According to Shotwell, the installation will also serve as a critical backup power source for the surrounding region.

“The installation will provide enough backup power to power the city of Memphis, and more than sufficient energy to power the town of Southaven, Mississippi where the data center resides,” she said. “We will build new substations and invest in electrical infrastructure to provide stability to the area’s grid.”

Addressing Water Usage and Local Employment

Beyond energy infrastructure, Shotwell highlighted xAI’s commitment to water conservation and local job creation. The company plans to construct advanced water recycling plants designed to significantly reduce water consumption from the Memphis aquifer.

“We haven’t talked about it yet, but this is actually quite important,” Shotwell noted. “We will build state-of-the-art water recycling plants that will protect approximately 4.7 billion gallons of water from the Memphis aquifer each year.”

Furthermore, the project is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities. “And we will employ thousands of American workers from around the city of Memphis on both sides of the TN-MS border,” she added.

The Ratepayer Protection Pledge Explained

The Ratepayer Protection Pledge was initiated by the federal government as a response to growing concerns about the potential impact of large AI data centers on local electricity costs. An Insider report indicated that the pledge encourages companies involved in major AI infrastructure projects to assume responsibility for their own power generation needs.

By committing to develop dedicated power sources, companies like xAI aim to prevent the increased energy consumption of their facilities from burdening local residents and businesses with additional utility expenses. This initiative seeks to balance the rapid advancement of AI technology with the economic stability of the communities that host these energy-intensive operations.
