Tesla has officially confirmed that its largest Model Y variant to date, the six-seater Model Y L, will be launched in Australia this year. The vehicle’s arrival was anticipated following its appearance in Australia’s ROVER vehicle certification database in late February, signalling its approval for local sale.

Extended Space and New Seating Configuration

The upcoming Model Y L is designed to cater to buyers seeking increased space and versatility. While specific pricing and local specifications are yet to be released, details from certification documents and other markets provide insight into the vehicle’s capabilities.

The Model Y L is set to feature an all-wheel-drive powertrain. Powering this variant will be an 88.2 kWh battery pack, which is likely sourced from LG and is a Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) unit. This battery is also used in all-wheel-drive models manufactured at Tesla’s Shanghai factory.

Performance and Range Specifications

Technical documentation indicates a kerb weight of 2,088 kg, with the battery pack contributing 465 kg to that total. Based on European approval documentation from December 2025, this battery configuration is capable of delivering an estimated range of up to 681 km when equipped with 19-inch wheels.

Further enhancing its practicality, the Model Y L boasts an extended wheelbase, measuring 186 mm longer than the standard Model Y. This brings the overall length of the vehicle to 4.97 metres, contributing to its spacious interior and cargo capacity.

Interior Comfort and Versatility

A key distinguishing feature of the Model Y L is its six-seat configuration. The front seats offer adjustable headrests for enhanced comfort. The second row is equipped with two individual “captain’s chairs” that include retractable armrests. These seats can be adjusted via the rear seat screen or a dedicated button located on the seat cushion, a feature unique to the Model Y L.

Access to the third row is facilitated by the design of the second-row captain’s chairs. The third row itself accommodates two passengers and includes cup holders on either side, offering a practical space for occupants.

For cargo, the second and third-row seats can be conveniently folded down using buttons located in the boot area. This configuration unlocks a substantial boot space exceeding 2,500 litres, positioning the Model Y L as one of the most capacious vehicles in its SUV segment.

Driving Dynamics and Market Introduction

On the road, the Model Y L will incorporate continuously variable dampers, technology also found in the Model 3 and Model Y Performance variants, suggesting a focus on ride comfort and handling.

The initial launch of a six-seater Model Y L occurred in China in August last year, with prices starting at A$72,700. Reports from that launch indicated significant consumer interest, with nearly 40,000 orders registered on its first day.

Tesla Australia is expected to announce precise launch timing, detailed local specifications, and confirmed pricing closer to the vehicle’s official market introduction. Industry observers will be closely monitoring these announcements.
