Australia is poised to welcome a new electric vehicle contender, as China’s best-selling EV, the low-cost Geely EX2 electric hatchback, has been confirmed for the Australian market. Geely, the prominent Chinese auto manufacturer, made the announcement in December, signaling a significant move into right-hand-drive markets following its recent release in Thailand.

Record-Breaking Sales in China

The Geely EX2, known as the Geely Xingyuan in its domestic market, achieved remarkable success in 2025, becoming China’s top-selling car overall. The company reported sales exceeding 465,000 units for the model. This impressive figure was bolstered by seven consecutive months where monthly sales surpassed 40,000 units, with September 2025 alone seeing over 50,000 units sold. This popularity has allowed the EX2 to outsell notable competitors such as the BYD Seagull and even the Tesla Model Y in China.

Platform and Market Positioning

The EX2 is built on the same Global Intelligent Electric Architecture (GEA) platform as Geely’s popular EX5 electric SUV, which has already found over 4,000 buyers in Australia since its March 2025 launch. This shared architecture suggests a degree of technological synergy and potential cost efficiencies for the brand.

Anticipated Australian Specifications and Pricing

While official Australian specifications and pricing are yet to be released, the EX2 is expected to offer strong value, with a projected price point around or below AUD $30,000. The hatchback measures approximately 4.14 metres in length, placing it in direct competition with established electric hatchbacks in the Australian market, such as the BYD Dolphin and the MG4.

Powertrain and Battery Details

In Thailand, the EX2 is available in Pro and Max variants, both equipped with a 40.16 kWh CATL-sourced Lithium-Iron-Phosphate (LFP) battery pack. This configuration offers a claimed range of 395 km, which is anticipated to translate to around 320 km under the Australian WLTP testing cycle. For charging, the EX2 supports 6.6 kW AC charging and 70 kW DC fast charging, providing convenient options for owners.

Performance and Interior Features

The Thai-market variants are powered by an 85 kW rear-mounted electric motor, enabling a brisk 0-50 km/h acceleration time of just 3.9 seconds. Inside, the EX2 boasts a prominent 14.6-inch infotainment screen, featuring a software system similar to that found in the Australian-delivered Geely EX5 SUV.

Launch Timeline and Market Entry

Geely initially launched the EX2 in the third quarter of 2024. Its upcoming arrival in Australia is slated for the second half of 2026. Further details regarding the local model’s specifications are expected closer to the launch date. The company aims to position the EX2 as an accessible entry point into electric vehicle ownership for Australian consumers.
