Tesla is set to introduce Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) functionality to select electric vehicles, enabling them to support the local power grid and potentially earn money for their owners. The new feature will be rolled out under the “Powershare Grid Support Program.”

Initial Rollout and Expansion Plans

The company announced via a post on X that the V2G capability is “coming soon” and will initially be available to owners of the Cybertruck in select Texas markets. This program aims to allow EV owners to contribute to their communities by supporting the grid during periods of high demand.

Following its launch in Texas, Tesla plans to expand the Powershare program to California, a significant market for the brand. Further expansion across the United States and potentially beyond North America is anticipated in the near future.

How Powershare Works

Tesla has dedicated a page on its website, titled “What is Powershare Grid Support,” to provide detailed information about the new program. According to the explanation, Powershare allows a Cybertruck to send energy back to the grid during high-demand events. Owners in participating regions will receive credits on their energy bills for contributing power, thereby enhancing their community’s energy resilience.

Cybertruck’s Power Capabilities

The Tesla Cybertruck was the first vehicle in the company’s lineup to come equipped with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality straight from the factory. This feature has gained traction among US owners, who have demonstrated its capabilities in various scenarios, utilizing the 11.5 kW power output from the truck’s 123 kWh battery pack. This capacity is comparable to storing energy equivalent to nearly ten Tesla Powerwall 3 home batteries.

In May 2025, Tesla highlighted the V2L feature in a promotional video, stating, “Powershare lets you plug in tools, gear or even another EV via 120V & 240V outlets in the bed. Bringing you backup power & off-grid freedom anywhere you go and can even power your after work party on site.”

The video showcased the Cybertruck’s ability to power a full festival, including food trucks, restroom trailers, refrigerators, and audiovisual equipment, even facilitating welding demonstrations to emphasize its power delivery potential.

Future Model Compatibility

While V2L has been confirmed for Tesla’s Model Y Performance vehicles in the US, it remains to be seen if these models will be integrated into the Powershare Grid Support Program. Future variants of the Model 3 and Model Y are also expected to offer this capability.

Industry Significance

The introduction of V2G technology by Tesla is a significant development, as it has been a much-requested feature by owners for several years. This move is particularly notable in regions like Australia, where V2G capability is a key consideration for many potential EV buyers. Currently, few vehicles offer factory-installed V2G, but the market is expected to grow. Tesla’s initiative is a substantial step towards utilizing the stored energy in EVs, which often remains idle, benefiting both owners and the broader energy infrastructure.
