A new large electric SUV from BYD, potentially its flagship Dynasty series model, has been spotted undergoing testing in China and has now appeared in regulatory filings, revealing its name as the BYD Datang, or BYD Great Tang. The vehicle is expected to feature a remarkable 1,000 kW DC charging capacity.
Powertrain and Performance Specifications Emerge
Information from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) documents, shared by CNC, indicates the BYD Datang will be offered in both single and dual-motor configurations. The single-motor variant will come with either a 300 kW or 370 kW rear-wheel-drive setup. The more powerful dual-motor version will boast a combined output of 585 kW.
These power figures will be crucial for propelling the substantial 5.26-meter long SUV, which has a gross weight of 3,245 kg, positioning it as a significant family vehicle.
Advanced Charging Technology and Design
While specific battery pack details were not included in the latest filing, it is anticipated that the BYD Datang will be equipped with a battery pack comparable to or larger than the 108.8 kWh unit found in the current BYD Tang.
Visually, the new SUV presents a luxurious aesthetic and appears to be equipped with a front Lidar sensor, suggesting integration with BYD’s advanced autonomous driving system, ‘God’s Eye’.
The BYD Datang is expected to represent a more premium offering than the existing Tang SUV. The Tang, relaunched in March 2025, already showcases the ‘Super e-Platform’ capable of 1,000 kW charging. This platform supports 10C charging speeds, enabling an impressive addition of 400 km of range in just five minutes. It operates on a 1,000 V architecture with 1,000 A charging current, designed to add approximately 2 km of range every second.
BYD’s ‘Flash Charging’ Network Expansion
BYD refers to its high-power charging infrastructure as the ‘Flash charging’ network, which commenced its rollout across China last year. This initiative is being developed in partnership with other infrastructure providers, with an initial target of approximately 15,000 1 MW charging stations.
The expansion of this network is slated for international markets in 2026, including right-hand-drive markets like the UK, along with Europe and other global regions, as reported in July of the previous year.
Global Expansion and Market Positioning
BYD continues to broaden its electric vehicle portfolio, ranging from compact Kei cars to large, ultra-luxury 7-seater SUVs. The new Datang SUV, likely targeting large families who prioritize rapid charging capabilities, is anticipated to be officially unveiled before the Beijing Auto Show in April of this year.
The development of this model, utilizing BYD’s latest architecture and blade battery technology, suggests a potential future release in markets like Australia. Currently, a smaller version, the BYD Tang PHEV (known as the Sealion 8 in Australia), is already available as a 7-seater. Confirmation of a BYD Tang BEV model entering the Australian market remains pending.
