Owners of first-generation Rivian R1T and R1S electric vehicles will soon gain enhanced control over their cars, approaching a digital key experience without needing their smartphone or a physical key fob. This update comes via a new Apple Watch companion app integrated into the latest version of Rivian’s iPhone application.
Apple Watch App for Enhanced Vehicle Access
The upcoming version 3.9 of the Rivian smartphone app introduces an Apple Watch component. This feature will allow owners of 2021-2024 R1T and R1S models to perform essential vehicle functions, including locking, unlocking, and initiating the driving process, directly from their wrist. The update also enables users to activate the car’s alarm, set a desired state of charge, and adjust cabin temperature remotely.
While this functionality offers significant convenience, it is crucial to note that it differs from the full digital key support found in second-generation Rivian vehicles. The Apple Watch app requires the owner to have a cellular-connected Apple Watch and for the app to be running in the foreground, and to be open to start driving. For owners who do not already possess a cellular-enabled Apple Watch, the cost starts at approximately $299 in the U.S.
Distinction from Full Digital Key Support
True digital key support, a standard feature on the 2025 and newer Rivian R1T and R1S models, operates more seamlessly. These newer vehicles allow owners to store a digital key in their smartphone’s digital wallet, enabling automatic unlocking upon approach and automatic locking upon departure, provided the phone is in the driver’s pocket. In contrast, first-generation owners will need to manually tap their Apple Watch screen to lock and unlock their vehicles.
Rivian’s full digital key system is designed for broad compatibility, supporting not only the iPhone and Apple Watch but also Google Pixel and Samsung Android phones. The new Apple Watch companion app will also be accessible to owners of second-generation R1S and R1T vehicles.

Version 3.9 of the Rivian smartphone app, which includes the Apple Watch functionality, is anticipated to be available on the app store in the coming weeks.
