GAC, the automotive manufacturer recently introduced to the Australian market, has received official approval for its upcoming affordable electric hatchback, the Aion UT, to be sold in the country. This development comes just days after the model’s Australian launch was confirmed.
Vehicle Specifications and Market Positioning
According to regulatory approval documents, the GAC Aion UT is slated for release in Australia in a single variant, featuring a 150 kW electric motor. The vehicle is anticipated to be priced in the competitive sub-$30,000 bracket. With a tare weight of 1,700 kg for its 4.27-metre length, the Aion UT is positioned as a relatively lightweight contender. It is expected to rival established electric hatchbacks such as the MG4, GWM Ora, and BYD Dolphin. The Australian-spec model will come equipped with 17-inch wheels, surpassing the size offered on the entry-level BYD Dolphin.
Design and Interior Features
The Aion UT boasts a distinctive design, characterized by a sloping front fascia and a curved rear hatch. Its charge port is conveniently located on the front driver’s side, providing easy access for charging. The vehicle’s exterior design originated from GAC’s design center in Milan, Italy. Inside, the Aion UT presents a minimalist interior dominated by two screens: a prominent 14.6-inch central infotainment touchscreen and a smaller 8.8-inch display positioned behind the steering wheel.
Practicality and Cargo Space
Practicality is a key feature, with the Aion UT offering up to 440 litres of boot space with the rear seats in their upright position. This capacity can be expanded significantly to 1,600 litres when the rear seats are folded down, providing ample room for cargo.
Global Rollout and Australian Arrival
The GAC Aion UT made its global debut at the Guangzhou Auto Show in 2024. Initially, the model featured a 100 kW motor. In 2025, a more powerful version with a 150 kW motor was introduced in Thailand, and this is the configuration confirmed for the Australian market. The potential for the Aion UT to enter Australia was first hinted at in September 2025 when a pink unit was observed undergoing testing on Sydney roads.
GAC’s Expanding Australian Presence
The Aion UT will be GAC’s second electric vehicle offering in Australia, following the recent launch of the Aion V electric SUV late last year. Despite its relatively new presence, GAC has already established a network of 15 dealerships nationwide, with plans to expand to 35 by the end of 2026. Pricing and specific local specifications for the Aion UT are expected to be announced closer to its official launch, anticipated in the second quarter of the current year.
