EV Engineering News
German automotive supplier ZF has announced a significant multi-year contract with a leading Indian original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for its advanced AxTrax 2 LF electric portal axle. This substantial order, comprising several thousand units, is set to bolster the electric vehicle sector in India and contribute to global exports.
Next-Generation Electric Axle Technology
The AxTrax 2 LF, first unveiled at the Busworld 2023 trade show, represents a significant leap in electric bus axle technology. It is engineered as a fully integrated, low-floor solution that ingeniously combines propulsion, braking, and suspension systems into a single, compact unit.
This integrated design offers a key advantage: it frees up valuable internal space within the vehicle. This additional room can be strategically utilized for larger battery packs, thereby extending the operational range of electric buses, or for enhanced passenger accommodation, improving comfort and capacity.
Enhanced Performance and Efficiency
ZF reports that the second-generation AxTrax 2 LF boasts an impressive energy efficiency improvement of up to 20% compared to its predecessor. This enhanced efficiency translates directly into reduced battery requirements, making electric buses more cost-effective and extending their operational range on a single charge.
The advanced system features dual permanent-magnet hairpin motors, a sophisticated 800-volt Silicon Carbide (SiC) inverter, and an effective oil-cooling mechanism. These components collectively deliver a robust performance, capable of producing up to 360 kW of continuous power and a peak torque of 36,800 Nm.
According to ZF’s specifications, this power output is sufficient to handle challenging gradients, enabling a 25% climbing grade even for a 30-ton articulated bus equipped with a single driven axle. This capability is crucial for operating electric buses effectively in diverse geographical terrains.
Strategic Importance and Global Reach
Andreas Moser, head of ZF’s Commercial Vehicle Solutions division, commented on the significance of the order. “This order highlights ZF’s strength as a trusted partner in advancing zero-emission mobility and reflects the continuing strong global demand for products across all key commercial vehicle domains,” Moser stated.
The agreement underscores ZF’s commitment to supporting the global transition towards sustainable transportation. The inclusion of India’s domestic market as well as global exports in the delivery plan indicates the growing acceptance and demand for advanced electric vehicle components worldwide.
ZF’s Role in Electromobility
ZF has established itself as a key player in the electric vehicle (EV) supply chain, providing a wide array of technologies that facilitate the development of cleaner and more efficient transportation solutions. The company’s focus on innovation and performance in its electric drivetrain systems, like the AxTrax 2 LF, positions it as a critical partner for OEMs aiming to electrify their fleets.
The AxTrax 2 LF is specifically designed for the demanding environment of public transportation, where reliability, efficiency, and performance are paramount. By offering integrated solutions, ZF aims to simplify the integration of electric powertrains for bus manufacturers, accelerating the adoption of electric buses in urban and intercity transport.
First Deliveries and Timeline
First deliveries of the AxTrax 2 LF axles under this new contract are slated to commence in 2026. The multi-year nature of the order suggests a long-term commitment from the Indian OEM, reflecting confidence in ZF’s technology and manufacturing capabilities. This significant volume order is expected to have a considerable impact on the production of electric buses in India.
The demand for electric buses is being driven by government initiatives worldwide, including ambitious targets for reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality in urban centers. ZF’s contribution through advanced components like the AxTrax 2 LF is vital for meeting these evolving market needs and accelerating the shift towards sustainable public transport.
