Kia is making a significant move into the affordable electric vehicle market with the unveiling of the new Kia EV2. This compact electric crossover is set to become Kia’s most budget-friendly EV to date, with an anticipated starting price around $35,000 (€30,000). Designed to compete in the bustling European market, the EV2 will go head-to-head with rivals like the Renault 4, Ford Puma Gen-E, and the upcoming Volkswagen ID. Polo Cross, offering European consumers more accessible electric mobility options.
Built on a 400-volt iteration of the versatile E-GMP platform, shared with models like the EV3 and EV4, the Kia EV2 will feature a single front-mounted electric motor. Buyers will have a choice between two battery configurations: a Standard Range model with a 42.2 kWh battery offering an estimated WLTP range of 197 miles (317 km), and a Long Range version equipped with a 61 kWh battery, capable of achieving up to 278 miles (448 km) on a single charge.
A standout feature for this segment is the EV2’s charging capability, offering both 11 kW and 22 kW AC charging. This caters to the European market where many EV owners utilize higher-power home chargers. A full charge using a 22 kW source takes approximately 2 hours and 35 minutes for the Standard Range model and 3 hours for the Long Range variant.
DC fast charging is also supported, with the Standard Range model capable of charging from 10% to 80% in about 29 minutes, and the Long Range model in roughly 30 minutes. While specific peak DC charging speeds were not disclosed, these figures are impressive for a vehicle positioned as a city-focused car.
Leveraging the Hyundai Motor Group’s advanced E-GMP platform, the EV2 boasts Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, allowing it to power external devices, and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) capability, enabling it to send power back to the electrical grid.
The Kia EV2 shares a nearly identical wheelbase (100.9 inches / 2,565 mm) with the Hyundai Inster EV, though the two vehicles are distinct in their platform origins and dimensions. The EV2 is slightly larger than the Inster, measuring 159.9 inches (4,060 mm) in length and 70.8 inches (1,800 mm) in width.
Inside, the EV2 offers flexibility with either a conventional five-seat layout or a more premium four-seat configuration featuring independent sliding and reclining rear seats. The interior is enhanced by Kia’s ccNC Lite infotainment system, displayed on a 12.3-inch central touchscreen. This is complemented by a separate 5.3-inch screen for climate controls and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The Lite version of the infotainment system mirrors the core features and display of the full ccNC system, including over-the-air software updates, but is designed for cost-effectiveness. However, over-the-air map updates for navigation are not included.
Practicality is addressed with a 0.5 cubic feet (15-liter) front trunk. Cargo space in the rear is 14.2 cubic feet (403 liters) for the four-seater version and a slightly smaller 12.7 cubic feet (362 liters) for the five-seater model.
Visually, the EV2 adopts Kia’s ‘Opposites United’ design language, characterized by its upright daytime running lights and a generally boxy silhouette. Despite its compact size, Kia offers wheel options up to 19 inches, with base models featuring 16-inch wheels.
Safety is a priority, with a comprehensive suite of standard driver-assistance systems, including Highway Driving Assist 2, Smart Cruise Control 2, Lane Keeping Assist, and Lane Following Assist 2. The EV2 also includes digital key functionality utilizing NFC, Bluetooth, and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technologies.
Production of the Kia EV2 will take place at Kia’s Zilina factory in Slovakia, alongside the EV4. The Standard Range model is slated to begin production in February, with the Long Range and GT-Line variants following in June.
